V was born and raised in Heywood, growing up in Vista Del Rey among the turf wars of the Valentinos and 6th Street gangs. Her mother was a single mom who never spoke of her father and would always change the subject if he was ever brought up. They lived in the combat zone of Night City - a veritable war zone of gang wars and violence - and were homeless. They lived without any sort of proper shelter and would have to migrate and find places of relative safety where they could. They never stayed very long in any one place, food came every other day when things were good, and life was overall just very difficult. Mom worked evenings and well into the night and spent most of her money just securing food for herself and little Val. By the time that Val was 6, she was starting to get into things and steal food and items to help mom so that money wasn't quite so tight, and she also started figuring out how to repair the clothes they wore to make them last longer. In addition to this, she also took side jobs from a big-time fixer. They were small jobs - mostly safe and without much danger for a kid - but she excelled at them, so they continued.

Mom didn't come home one morning after Val had turned 10. She did as she promised mom she would do: she waited a couple of days, then she knew she would have to take care of herself. She let her curiosity get the better of her, however, and did seek out the truth as to what happened. She eventually found that mom had gotten caught in some crossfire between some Valentino boys and the 6th Street guys. As unfortunate as it was, this was the way of it and how this kind of life was. She did her best not to be consumed with it and move on. By the time she was 14 she started working - like mother, like daughter, one would suppose. Tragic, really, but it beat stealing to survive, and she managed herself without anyone else to pay off for protection or to find clients. (The best protection was running very fast so nobody could catch her. Yep.) She was still working for that same fixer, who she now looked to more as a father than just a boss, but she was hungry for the extra money no matter the danger.

About two years after she started working nights, her fixer was killed as well. Something about an ancient and unsettled debt or something - she didn't know what, exactly - but it crushed her. She started drinking because she was now in a line of work where men would buy her things if she flirted and batted her eyes at them. She lived pretty recklessly for a while - never sober, always looking for clientele that looked more dangerous than your standard ilk. If something happened, you know, something just happened. Things happened in Night City and the NCPD didn't care to follow up on street rats like her.

What eventually broke her out of this spiral was picking up one Valentino boy named Gabriel Mendoza Ruiz of an evening when she was seventeen. He took a bit of a shine to her - or maybe the night was just particularly good - and made it a point to earn her trust and keep her around. They eventually grew quite close and Val felt like she found a reason to stop being so reckless in her actions. Not that the drinking stopped, but she was healthier about it. Gabe eventually had her start slinging drugs for him in addition to her usual evening work. By the time she turned eighteen the two of them were dating and near inseparable. Things seemed good and like her life was on the up and up.

Personality:
  • Confident: Sometimes you meet one of those kinds of people who walk into a room and they make their presence known and they somehow manage to have conversations with literally anyone and they're just the epitome of self-assurance. This is definitely Val. She's got a seriously bad case of self-assurance that toes the line of cockiness.

  • Impulsive: Unfortunately, when you're young and definitely invincible, you don't think very far ahead and you don't consider those pesky little things called consequences. You jump into things headfirst and you just kinda ride it out and refuse to acknowledge that the things you do affect others and might make them mad. Or something. So, you know, this is a very Val trait. If something sounds fun? She'll just do it. If she thinks something will get her something she wants? She'll do it. If it's something that she's decided is #selfcare? She does it. She'll figure out how to deal with the consequences as they hit her.

  • Bold: Obviously, impulsivity needs a cute date-mate, and that comes in the form of boldness. Being impulsive is one thing: you say stupid stuff, you do some small-time dumb things, but when you couple it up with being bold, you do really big dumb things. You try to steal someone's car and take it for a joyride, you try to pickpocket a fixer who's been in the game longer than you've been alive and you definitely get caught, and instead of being scared you tell him off for laying a hand on you, etc. The bigger and more grand then the better, and if you actually pull it off? Talk about some mad rep.

  • Mercurial: Val grew up with absolutely no sense of security in any part of her life. She lost her mother at the age of ten and the man who sort of stood in as a father was not the most emotionally stable man himself. She never really learned how to keep ahold of her motions and stop them from getting away from her, and she definitely has not learned how to remain the definition of stoicism as of yet. One comment can change a pleasant conversation into a yelling match without much warning.

  • Skittish: This is most easily seen around men, but she can tend to be skittish in situations where she is far out of her depth and very much aware of it. Being near a rather strong-looking man who could easily subdue her makes her very jittery and aloof, people grabbing her without her permission makes her nervous, things of that nature. If she perceives danger that she feels is an actual threat and not just a normal acceptable level of risk, she acts erratically.

Always Keep In Mind: Val acts incredibly tough and like she knows exactly what she's doing. On some level, this is true, but she also woefully lacks the years of experience that come with being a hardened edgerunner that the V of 2077 would have. Beneath all of the bravadoes is a kid that was forced to grow up far too soon and has lived almost every aspect of her life in fear, constantly looking over her shoulder. She's the definition of fake it 'til you make it.

Questions:
What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy?
'M not picky's long I got a roof over my head'n food to eat.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while?
Not right away? The pie was really good 'n food seems to be regular here? So if going to class is the payment for regular meals I think I'll stick with that.

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react?
If anyone from 6th Street shows up I'm just gonna be real scarce around 'em. Those guys'r big'n tough 'n don't think I could take any'f 'em in a fight.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force?
When cornered with nowhere to run, or if a point needs to be made.

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be?
Uh, get the power'n to help those less fortunate'n do what they want.
